Orca
Kitsap Middle School, Silverdale, WA 2021
This suspended sculpture evokes the fantastical experience of encountering a life-size Orca swimming overhead. Sited in the entry to a public school, the artwork conjures the graceful contours and epic scale of the endangered species that inhabit the nearby waterways. The sculpture features steam-bent and hand-carved woods that are sustainably harvested and native to the region, including white ash, Sitka spruce and Western red cedar; the ribbed form evokes the region’s proud boat-building traditions.
