Ascent
Public Art
Pierce College, Fort Steilacoom, WA 2019
A suspended 26′ l x 7′ d sculpture activates a four-story stairwell. A series of hand-crafted, intricately patterned wooden sculptures descend in an undulating column from the ceiling on the fourth floor to the area above the seating area on the first floor. Conceived of as an interactive experience, the sculpture embodies the journey students take at Pierce College: traversing the staircase, the artwork animates, creating myriad compositions that shift and change, just as student’s perspectives evolve and grow as they pursue their education. The diversity of perspectives evoke the spectrum of cultures, ideas, and viewpoints that thrive at Pierce College.
