Wishing Wands
Public Art
Berryessa Park, San Jose, CA • 2009
Evoking the childhood tradition of making wishes by blowing on dandelion seed heads, a series of three stainless steel sculptures are sited in a public park. Each seed head features thirty-eight 2 1/2″” Austrian crystals that catch the light, refracting sunlight in prismatic rainbows onto children who “catch” and play amidst the rainbows, including the many children who use wheelchairs and frequent the accessible playground nearby. Conversations with children inspired the artwork; local schoolchildren worked with Wowhaus, making a wish on each of the crystals before they were incorporated in the sculptures.
