Activating a commons in a large development, this landmark 18’ w x 28’ h opalescent glass mosaic mural is inspired by one of Hayward’ smallest, yet significant inhabitants – the Western Pygmy Blue Butterfly. This tiny butterfly – the size of your smallest fingernail – thrives in the saltwater marshes that adjoin the City; its existence here is testimony to the success of Hayward’s visionary efforts to restore this vital, diverse ecosystem. The Hayward salt marshes are not only habitat for species like the Wester Blue Pygmy, they are vital to protecting the Bay Area against sea level rise and aiding in carbon capture. The biodiversity of Hayward’s saltwater marshes is mirrored by the cultural diversity; the array of vibrant colors within the artwork evoke the rich natural and cultural resources of a community that nurtures both people and the planet.
