Swell Break: Deep Craft on the Edge

The Headlands Center for the Arts invited Scott to stage a workshop as a continuation of his Deep Craft product development. Scott invited surfer/sculptor Lawrence Labianca to help lead a four-day workshop to design, prototype and test a series of bellyboards and hand planes using simple, easily accessible tools and materials. Scott and Lawrence encouraged innovation in both shape and riding style, obviating a graphic identity associated with the Headlands and Fort Cronkhite. The project posited the potential for a former military base on the coast of California to be repurposed as a surf-oriented research and development lab.
