Lake Merritt, Oakland, CA • 2019
A landmark bronze sculpture is integrated into a rain garden that reclaims urban runoff from storm drains, part of a sustainable streetscape and park design. The sculpture is inspired by an Ohlone myth about a sea monster who lived in the the Bay. Photo-etched granite “portals” integrated into the hardscape complement the sculpture, providing insight into the ecosystem of this saltwater estuary that is being revitalized in the heart of the city. Community engagement sessions informed the design of the artwork, which developed in consultation with City landscape architects, PlaceWorks, and specialists in the Oakland Creeks, Watershed & Stormwater Department.
