Edible Schoolyard, Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, Berkeley, CA • 2001
Conceived as the “hearth” of the school, the kitchen classroom evokes a sense of home in the context of an urban school. We selected materials to gain character with heavy use and wear. Ecologicaly-harvestedl woods and reclaimed materials speak to the history and ecology of the site. The Edible Schoolyard, founded by chef Alice Waters, is hailed as a national educational model, incorporating gardening and cooking into the curriculum of a public school. 50% of materials used in the furnishings were reclaimed from the old cafeteria that was being demolished during the school’s renovation.
