Cornucopia
Public Art
Commissioned by: Blackhawk Developers & AF Evans Senior Housing, Brentwood, CA • 2008
Cornucopia reflects the agricultural heritage of the Brentwood region, featuring major crops such as peaches, olives and grapes in a “frieze” motif in a series of tables and benches of cast concrete. The table and bench bases echo an acorn, a twist on the classical tradition of evoking plant forms in architectural ornament. The acorn was a major food source for the Native Americans who lived in the region; oak trees are still in the region. The tiles are produced in the historic Malibu Tile tradition, with delicate, hand-drawn lines and vivid colors rendered in highly durable glazes.
