Studio Berkeley, CA, 2005
Scott was commissioned to design this 325 square foot guest house/studio for a couple in West Berkeley. Nestled in a mature garden, the house optimizes privacy while opening up to the outdoors. All exterior woodwork is salvaged old growth redwood, milled from old wine barrels; the wood even retains the faint scent and color of wine. A large 8' x 10' skylight provides natural light year-round; copper trim will gain patina with age. The building's bathroom has a garden entrance, making it accessible if the house is occupied (or if the party continues after the guests have gone to sleep). The bath is tiled with a central drain, allowing it to be literally hosed down with the garden hose.
