Comfort Project.

The Comfort Project is an ongoing collection of research into the nature of comfort. Loosely defined, the work is an attempt to articulate an alternative/supplement to the science of Human Factors Engineering, proposing new models for the integration of making and using everyday objects and environments.

This project is closely tied with Scott’s teaching at the California College of Arts and Crafts; he taught an interdisciplinary studio course called ‘Of House and Home’, and recently created a course entitled ‘Comfort: Origins and Consequences’. For the latter, Scott was awarded a Faculty Development Grant to create a database of text and images studying ideal states of comfort for a diverse group of urban dwellers. The course produced a website (http://www.comfort.homeip.net) chronicling the studio projects and writings of students enrolled in the Comfort class.

We intend to create an exhibition and publication of this work in the near future, and will eventually have an interactive survey linked to our website to further the research. Meanwhile, please feel free to e-mail us your interpretation of an ideal state of comfort.
