Point Load III Maple, aluminum, plastic

Point Load II This 2-piece chair is based upon the “chief chairs” of West Africa, and is a meditation on minimal seating using local horticultural salvage. The structure is based on a single joint which optimizes the “point load” capacity of commercially non-viable woods such as Black Locust and Acacia. The piece explores alternatives to conventional conceptions of “comfort”; the chair positions the user in a reclined position which allows gravity to pull the shoulders back, opening the chest and facilitating breathing and repose.
